So you’ve decided to take home a new, adorable addition to the family.  Maybe you have kids that have been pestering you for a pet, and you figured a bunny rabbit would be easy and gentle enough for them.  Don’t let the cute, fuzzy exterior fool you though- rabbits aren’t like stuffed animals.  And taking care of a rabbit isn’t like taking care of a dog or a cat, either.   In order to lead a long, healthy life with your family, your rabbit needs you to understand a few things about them from the very beginning. 

First of all, I would recommend that you take a pretty thorough look through the House Rabbit Society’s website at http://www.rabbit.org/.  That is the first place I look when I have important questions about taking care of my own pet rabbit. 

One of the most important things to remember is that bunnies are very delicate, easily scared creatures.  While they do not have much in the way of natural defenses, they do bite, scratch and kick, especially when they are scared or angry.  You have to realize that rabbits are prey animals. They are extremely timid and easy to frighten.   You might want to let it hop around in its cage / pen area for a week or two when you first bring it home and stick to petting it before you pick it up.  And be prepared: when you do pick it up, it will kick like a martial arts champion.  This doesn’t hurt, but it can be scary, and you should really work to minimize this.  Bunny spines weren’t intended to hold up against that kind of mid-air thrashing, so they can potentially really hurt themselves doing it.  It helps if you always keep their back legs supported well. 

Please, please, please never scold the bunny like a dog.  In fact, don’t scold them at all.  Because rabbits are nature’s happy meals, they will be terrified of any aggressive behavior, including shouting at it or children hitting it.  If your bunny is doing something you don’t like, just distract it or very gently correct the behavior (i.e. take your newly chewed shoes out of its mouth gently and replace them with a rabbit chew toy.) 

Once you have become accustomed to taking care of your rabbit and your rabbit has become accustomed to you and your house, you will want to give it space to hop around and get some exercise.  Most rabbits will sit in a cage day after day with no complaint, but they are really pretty intelligent creatures, so even if they tolerate it they won’t necessarily be happy.  A bored rabbit is a destructive rabbit.  I took the door off of my rabbit’s cage and put a wire playpen permanently in front of her cage so she can hop back and forth freely.  I also give her wooden bird toys and empty toilet paper tubes to play with, plus a plain cardboard box (not the shiny kind with ink and paint) to hide in.  She also loves to shred un-dyed tissue paper. 

As for food, they have to have CONSTANT access to vast amounts of fresh timothy hay (I go through a dog-food sized bag a month), a water bottle (I bought the biggest one I could find), a handful of rabbit food pellets once a day, and some fresh veggies.  You’ll want to look online before you give them different kinds of veggies, as certain kinds can mess with their delicate digestive system.  My rabbit particularly likes spinach and carrots, about a cupful at a time. 
 

The reason it is so very important for you to avoid overly frightening your rabbit is that they can potentially scare themselves into a heart attack, or go into shock and die several hours after a traumatic event.  Also, they may stop eating and using the bathroom if they are traumatized, which can lead to something called G.I stasis, which is essentially when their digestive tract comes to a standstill.  This is potentially life-threatening.  If you suspect your rabbit has been badly upset by something, pay attention to its droppings over the next couple of days to make sure everything is still moving along, so to speak.   This is another reason that lots and lots of timothy hay is important- the roughage keeps their digestion going.  Sometimes though, it is best to take extra preventative measures.  When my rabbit was really stressed out after a long day of travel, my vet gave me some metoclopramide that I can feed her through a syringe if I notice something amiss. 

I use the Carefresh brand of bedding for inside her cage.  It is made out of recycled hunks of paper pulp or something similar, and you can get it in pretty colors.  In my opinion it minimizes the smell better than wood chips, and it is much healthier for the rabbit.  Certain kinds of wood chips can cause health problems. 

Stay away from wire-mesh bottomed cages, they hurt the bunny’s feet. I have one with a plastic tray bottom and a detachable wire top for easy cleaning.  Also, they will kick poop and bedding and food outside the cage if they think it’s getting too dirty.  My rabbit is litterbox trained, so that is also an option. 

Bunnies are naturally social and will get lonely if you stick them in a room by themselves for a long time.  Plus, when they get used to not having people around, it will be harder to get them to accept being picked up and cuddled.  I keep my bunny next to my bed, and I pet her whenever I pass her pen and she’s outside.  I try not to pick her up when she goes inside her box or cage, so she feels safe in there.  She knows to come out of her cage when she wants to be played with. 

Other than that, just clip its toenails once every month or so, make sure it something to chew to keep those huge teeth in check, and that it has dry bedding to sleep on.    And be sure to give it lots of love!

But, probably the most significant thing to keep in mind is that you make an effort to see that the bird house actually fulfills the needs of the bird for which it is built. As an example, the size of the entry hole is key. In fact, it is critical in determining whether or not a bird will be attracted to a particular bird house. If you are building a structure with intent of housing a bluebird, the hole has to be much smaller than one that is meant to house a Red-Headed Woodpecker. The bluebird would never move into a home with a hole that is too large because it would allow too easy of an access for predators.
